I received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology from the University of Kentucky, finishing in 1996. From there I began what became a 25-year career working for a community mental health center which would change me in profound ways, both as a therapist and as a person. Through the years, I have worked with children and adults with so many different issues, but have found that we all share in common a desire and the ability to heal, no matter what our wounds. I have had the honor of helping people in so many journeys to cope with immense trauma, childhood abuse, anxiety, depression, suicide thoughts, and self-harm behaviors, ADHD, OCD, substance use, and much more. I have helped parents to deal with their children’s mental health issues and the many struggles of parenting, worked as director of a children’s intensive treatment program, and became a parent of three children myself! I have training in play therapy, trauma therapy, and PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy). I also have knowledge regarding LGBTQ issues and am a strong ally for this population. I have knowledge and understanding of the struggles of co-occurring mental health and substance use issues and currently serve as the chair for the local Boyle County ASAP Board, advancing understanding in the community in order to reduce stigma and get individuals the help and support they need for recovery. If you are looking for a safe place where you will be seen and heard, and helped to use your strengths to find healing, I am here for you!
What Our Clients Say
My son had struggled with depression and suicidal ideations for many years. I had begged him to speak with a therapist and he was EXTREMELY resistant. He finally got to the point that he was willing to speak with someone. I knew I had one chance to get him the help he needed. I am so thankful that I contacted Chris Whitsell! My son is doing so well, in fact he recently bought his first home. He gives Chris, who he refers to as a "cool dude", the credit for his improvement.
Chris Whitsell, LCSW-S has been a mentor and trusted colleague to me and statewide leader in children’s behavioral health over the past two decades, I highly recommend Chris Whitsell, LCSW-S to those families searching for a knowledgeable and compassionate child and family therapist. Chris embodies for me what I would want in a therapist for my own children and is someone I know can help make a difference for you.
